Starter
Write 'Fairtrade' on the board. Explain to the class that this is the answer to a question. But what is the question? In pairs children think of different questions.

Main Activity
Ask pupils for ideas of how buying a Fairtrade Geobar in the UK helps raisin producers in South Africa and elicit from the class that Fairtrade guarantees that producers are paid fairly. They may also mention that farming communities receive extra money for community development – if not, then explain this to the children. This is called the 'Fairtrade premium'.

In pairs pupils make a list of the ways in which the money from the Fairtrade premium has helped the EAC communities. Feed back as a class and then ask pupils to pick those which they think have been most important, explaining why. (e.g. a new water pump has meant that people don’t have to go a long way to fetch water; children can carry their books and equipment to school etc.)

Plenary

Read Sansar Chand’s story and compare the way Agrocel (a Fairtrade producer group in India) spend the Fairtrade premium to EAC. What are the similarities?
