5 - Fairtrade Superheroes
In this lesson the class creates a short sketch about a Fairtrade Superhero.
This lesson plan has links to Curriculum aims and programmes of study in English, Citizenship and Geography.
To understand the impact Fairtrade has had on 7 different countries through drama.
Students are able to explore, enrich and explain their ideas about Fairtrade through dramatic techniques.
Show the photo on the IWB as students come into the class. In pairs students think of a question they can ask about it e.g. Where is it? Who are these people? What is happening in the photo? How has Fairtrade helped the people in the picture? The class pick what they consider to be the best question and then discuss it in pairs/groups.
PHOTO: Planting the Blueberry Bushes
This is a photo from Apicoop in Chile, in July 2008, planting their first blueberry bushes directly in the soil on the Apicoop plot of land. Up to 70% of a family’s income can come from bees but relying on just one product is a risky business. This is why Apicoop decided to diversify by growing and exporting blueberries in 2006. Traidcraft supported the project by providing a grant to buy the blueberry bushes and a market to sell the product in their new Blueberry Geobar. The blueberries are grown on about 21 hectares of land. 8 members of Apicoop staff are involved in the blueberry project and Apicoop has become the only source in the world of honey-infused dried blueberries for export. 10 tonnes of dried blueberries are expected to be brought by Traidcraft in 2010 which will be the first harvest. On the first day of planting the bushes in July 2009, the local authorities, mayor and representatives the Agriculture and Trade Ministries participated in the planting process.

Discuss with the class the ways in which Fairtrade helps producers in poorer countries, such as Chile. Ask them if they can remember any examples from previous lessons. Divide students into groups and assign a country and producer group to each, handing around the relevant factsheets. Ask them to identify 3 examples of the ways in which Fairtrade has changed the lives of producers in their country and feed back as a class.
Ask each group to choose their favourite superhero (Superman, Spiderman, Incredible Hulk etc)
- What are their superpowers?
- How do they help the world? (They save people, set a 'good example', are honest, courageous and stick up for what they believe in)
In their groups students create their own 'Fairtrade Superhero' and present him/her to the class.

Explain that each group is going to develop a short 5 minute sketch of their 'Fair Trade Superhero' visiting the village/community and producer group they have been assigned.
Each play has to start with the line 'Help! Help! _____________we need you!'
Ask for volunteers and model an example for the class. Groups can also be taken through the process using the prompts below.
1. Why does the community need the Fairtrade super hero? What challenges do they face? What’s wrong within the community? Older students could be encouraged to create a 'Super villain'/ arch nemesis of the Fairtrade hero who represents these challenges.

3. How does the Fairtrade super hero make a difference/save the day?
Groups perform their sketch for the class.
Groups write an epitaph for their 'Fairtrade Super Hero'.
